How to eat better at work!

I found something interesting. Well, actually, I received it from my email and I would love to share this thing to you. It is about controlling your eating habit especially for the IT workers.

Why is it so hard to eat right? “When you’re hungry, you’re not a philosopher,” explains Dr. Daisy Merey, a physician and authority on eating habits.

Indeed, food — and especially the lack thereof — brings out our animal nature. And when we homo sapiens find ourselves in the artificial environment of the workplace, complete with its stresses, catered temptations, psychosocial dramas, smelly refrigerators, bureaucratic tedium and, yes, vending machines, we are animals who eat badly more often than not.

“You’re sitting in a room with no windows for hours, and sometimes you just get bored and eat,” says Natalie Davis-Runyan, a regional vice president for staffing firm Todays Office Professionals. And if you eat what’s within reach, such as cafeteria food, high-calorie snacks and so on, you’re alarmingly likely to develop health problems.

What can you do to improve what you eat at the office, which for many of us is the bulk of what we consume all day? Here are a few approaches to better nutrition in the land of heartburn and the pizza-sized chocolate chip cookie.

Bring Your Own Food

The consensus of health and nutrition professionals is that you’ll eat much better if you plan ahead and pack a lunch. “You have to be prepared and bring food that’s healthy,” says Merey. “A brown bag is always better than a restaurant or vending machines.”

Brown baggers are a small but significant contingent of the workforce. “There’s about 25 percent of the people who bring their own lunches and walk away from the birthday cake,” says Davis-Runyan.

Your planning should go beyond a lunch that includes fruits and vegetables and not too much sugar or fat. “Ideally, you want snacks with fiber, protein and carbs,” says Elysse Lakatos, a registered dietitian. For example, “pistachios have those nutrients, and it takes time to shell them,” she says — time that can give your craving a chance to subside before you stuff yourself.

Control Portions to Control Your Waistline

Whether it’s a meat entree or guilty snack in a bag, you’ve got to control portions to eat healthfully at the office. The key is to portion out at home what you’ll be eating in the break room.

If you must snack on fat-infused carbohydrates, try pre-portioned 100- or 150-calorie bags. “We have a natural tendency to finish the bag, whatever the size, even though people can satisfy cravings with small amounts,” says Miriam Pappo, director of clinical nutrition at Montefiore Medical Center.

Get Real About What’s Healthy

Educate yourself to understand what’s really nutritious. Those little cheesy fish-shaped crackers may be less nutritionally damaging than most potato chips, but they’re still not health food. “There are a lot of foods that we think are healthy, but they’re not,” says Pappo. “One of the biggest is muffins; even a regular doughnut can have many fewer calories.”

Still, sometimes you can fool yourself in a good way. “People who hide candy in a dark container are less likely to eat it than if they put it in a glass bowl,” says Merey.

Advocate for Institutional Change

Employees should bring their nutritional needs to management, which often controls the cafeteria as well as the vending machines. “The food service is a money maker for hospitals, so they want to balance what is healthy with what is profitable,” says Pappo. Unfortunately, unhealthy foods often make the most money because they sell so well.

Then there are catered lunches, those stacks of meaty sandwiches and mountains of over-the-top desserts mandated by executives looking to trigger each others’ budget envy. The first solution to try is the simplest: “Ask the people who are ordering if they can change the food,” says Tammy Lakatos, a registered dietitian and sister of Elysse Lakatos.

Take Special Care If You’re a Woman

Finally, women should remind themselves that their cardiovascular health is of great concern, media emphasis on men’s heart attacks notwithstanding. “More women than men die of heart disease each year,” says Dr. Aliya Browne, clinical director for the Hainesport Women’s Heart Center.

And women may have more difficulty staying away from unhealthy foods at the office, according to Browne: “We can become a bit more stressed than men, and that can make us more emotional eaters.”

Yahoo finally announces partnership with Microsoft!!!

Moments ago, an email reached me regarding this big news! Indeed it is such a big news! Rumor has it! It's finally true! Yahoo and Microsoft are now big partners!

Microsoft, Yahoo Officially Anounce Partnership

‘Bing to Replace Yahoo Search.’ -

Yahoo and Microsoft, as expected, have announced a major partnership. After a year and a half of failed talks, the pair finally have come together and cut a deal. Many changes were necessary for the deal to take place — a succession of Yahoo’s CEO leadership from co-founder Jerry Yang to outsider Carol Bartz and a new search engine from Microsoft (Bing) — but now that it’s here, it promises to change the face of the internet.

The pair will hold an estimated 28 percent of the search market, or roughly a third, behind Google, which will hold roughly two thirds of the market. The deal will last much longer than previously speculated — 10 years.

As previously anticipated, Microsoft’s new Bing search engine/algorithm will be replacing Yahoo’s search. Yahoo’s page will keep its look, but behind the scenes it will be powered by Bing. Yahoo will focus on selling ads using Microsoft’s AdCenter platform, which bids to challenge Google’s AdWords.

The two companies predict that the deal will raise revenue by over $500M USD.

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz cheered the deal, stating, "This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo!, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of Internet innovation and development. Users will continue to experience search as a vital part of their Yahoo! experiences and will enjoy increased innovation thanks to the scale and resources this deal provides.”

Bartz continued, “Advertisers will also benefit from scale and enjoy greater ease of use and efficiencies working with a single platform and sales team for premium advertisers. Finally, this deal will help us increase our investments in priority areas in winning audience properties, display advertising capabilities, and mobile experiences."

Steve Ballmer likewise was pleased by the deal, stating, "Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company. Success in search requires both innovation and scale. With our new Bing search platform, we’ve created breakthrough innovation and features. "

Google has previously vowed to challenge any such deal on antitrust grounds. The U.S. Department of Justice and the EU are currently considering the deal and will likely review it extensively in coming months.

It's been ages! Now I'm back!

It's been ages since I have updated this blog. I did a lot of stuff offline and online. Now, it's my turn to give you a recap of the things that I did while I was out. Again, I am so sorry for not being able to maintain this site for a several months!

On March 18, 2009, I attended the Computer Science Senior's Night.

This is my look.

And I won several awards

On March 20 2009, I attended the Baccalaureate Mass.

March 24 2009 - CS Year End Party

At BASAMANGAS, Jasaan<

Pictorials :D

Now tell me, why would I not gain weight after graduation? hahahahaha.. Since there are lots of parties and celebrations, there are lots of parties to attend and dinners to finish! hahaahaha Guess my wieght now! hahahaha!

Anyway, there are more events happened to me after March 24, of course! But let me summarize all of it now. In the first few weeks of my freedom from college, I did a lot of relaxing, eating and sleeping. Of course, there was vacation for me. However, I was not able to maintain this blog because I wanted my self to be free from things for a certain period of time. There was a certain time, during my slack days, that I was thinking of my future. Then, I started to apply for jobs online and walk-in. Unfortunately, there was no reply. Although there was a company that wanted me in, I refused their offer due to their bad record according to my other colleagues. As I was searching job offers in the internet, I realized that with my credibility and records, I can meet the company's requirements but I cannot compete with so many qualified applicants for a certain position. IT is a very wide-range field and competing with other professionals is a godforsaken battle. I remember the time that my mother told me, Accounting jobs are in every business. For me, in those times that I applied for jobs, finding an IT company here in my place is another godforsaken battle. In the end, I have decided to enter the Master of Business Administration program of my university.
It was around May that I have decided to enter a graduate school and proceed to higher studies, since I wanted business so badly and computer is just one my forte. In the course of my job hunting, I came to cross an insurance company named PruLife UK. I did a lot of thinking and I thought that why not take this as a part time job. Now, I am a certified Insurance Agent and Financial Adviser of PruLife UK, and a MBA student. Until now, I am also looking for freelance jobs. If you want to know my services then please contact me.

It has been a pleasure to write again in Crispy Papaya, but I feel so dizzy right now and it is already 4:00 in the morning. I need some sleep. Thank you guys for your support! I Love You All!

A Walk With Misty

Dude, it was my first time to roam around the city late at night by just bare foot!!!! After the session of the FLC, Dominic left me and Michelle. I don't feel like going home, so we planned to walk by in D.V. Soria's Night Cafe.

While seeing those fancy Ukay-Ukay, we met along the way Misty!!! She was still thin. I was worried about her not having any dinner by 7:15pm so we went to Jollibee Xavier!!! That was so dumb, Jollibee D.V. Soria was just behind us and yet we walk that long way to get to the Xavier branch!!! After a long talk, Jasper joined in and that had a little chit chat... Michelle wanted to get money for her tuition at M Lhuillier (bwhahah don't know the spelling)... Damned we went to a closed branch from the other side of the city!!! So, we went to the opposite side and luckily it was open!!! We got tired so we took Misty for her ride and then Michelle and I when home. :D

Still hoping for the next walk :D
